06/09/2023 | Galilee Institute's Latest Endeavor: Partnering with Uzima University for International Medical Courses

In a groundbreaking move, Galilee International Management Institute has joined forces with Uzima University in Kisumu, Kenya, to offer a range of medical courses to international students. This strategic partnership, set to last for seven years and renewable thereafter, is centred on three programmes: Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, and Bachelor of Science in Health Systems Management.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) sealing this alliance was signed on August 14, 2023, at Uzima University. Dr Cosmas Rhagot, Vice Chancellor of Uzima University, expressed his enthusiasm for this Kenyan-Israeli collaboration, emphasizing the invaluable international exposure and best practices that students will gain. He believes that interacting with top scholars and participating in exchange programmes with international peers will elevate the training of healthcare professionals not only in Kenya but also further afield.

Effective September 2023, GIMI will be able to recruit foreign students on behalf of Uzima University for the academic year 2023/2024.

Dr Joseph Shevel, President of Galilee International Management Institute, hailed this collaboration as a historic milestone. He called for other countries, universities, and medical schools to emulate this model, emphasizing the importance of shared experiences in producing highly skilled, adaptable healthcare providers equipped to tackle emerging health challenges.

Dr Shevel underscored the significance of this partnership in elevating Uzima University as a premier institution, not only within Kenya but throughout the region. He highlighted that clinical studies would be conducted in both Kenyan and Israeli hospitals, fostering a rich and diverse learning experience.

"Galilee Institute has worked with the Kenya Medical Training College, and more than 2,000 Kenyans have been trained in our institution," he said.

Furthermore, Dr Rhagot noted that this achievement follows Uzima University's recent recognition as the most outstanding university in health sciences in Africa during the 2023 African Academy Awards.

Mgr. Zaccheus Okoth, the founder of Uzima University, emphasized that this partnership would contribute to addressing the significant deficit of doctors in Kenya, aligning with the World Health Organization's recommendations of having one doctor for every 1,000 people.
